Les Rumbs, July 2008
Les Rumbs, 1907Christian Dior was born in Granville, Normandy. His father, Maurice, was a wealthy man and moved his family into this idyllic house named 'Les Rumbs' for the rhombus-shaped points of the compass, which is perched on a cliff just outside the 'centre ville'. He owned fertilizer factories that flooded the town with a foul smell, people walked around and when they caught a whiff they would say 'IT SMELLS OF DIOR TODAY'. His mother, Madeline, made it her occuption to surround herself with greenery, it was like she was obsessed with the 'smell of dior' to be that of flowers instead. Dior too was obsessed with flowers and plants, thanks to his mothers ideas;
'He learned [the flowers] their names and descriptions by heart from the colourful mail-order seed catalogues and would rush to meet the postman each day incase another had arrived'
It is as flowery today as it was a century ago.
